English 9- Intro to Literature

This course covers a variety of literature genres, including short stories, poems, several novels (settings/themes around WWII), and a Shakespeare play. During the 1st semester, students will read short stories and poems from a variety of authors. Students will answer comprehension questions at home and tutor will discuss the major themes of the stories and poems during class. Tutor will also discuss basic literary devices (plot, setting, simile, metaphor, etc.). During the 2nd semester, students will read 3 novels and complete a brief essay on each assigned reading. The tutor will give instructions on how to write a basic essay. Students will also read scenes from Taming of the Shrew” (by Shakespeare) aloud during class. Tutor will discuss main ideas and concepts from the novels and play, including Christian principles, and will encourage class discussion/ participation.
