English 9- Intro to Literature

This course covers a variety of literature genres, including short stories, poems, several novels (settings/themes around WWII), and a Shakespeare play. During the 1st semester, students will read short stories and poems from a variety of authors. Students will answer comprehension questions at home and tutor will discuss the major themes of the stories and poems during class. Tutor will also discuss basic literary devices (plot, setting, simile, metaphor, etc.). During the 2nd semester, students will read 3 novels and complete a brief essay on each assigned reading. The tutor will give instructions on how to write a basic essay. Students will also read scenes from Taming of the Shrew” (by Shakespeare) aloud during class. Tutor will discuss main ideas and concepts from the novels and play, including Christian principles, and will encourage class discussion/ participation. Tutor will also teach the basic components of a research paper and students will complete a research paper on an assigned author.  Required Curriculum: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe ($7.99 from Amazon.com, The Diary of Anne Frank ($5.99 from Amazon.com); Escape: Children of the Holocaust: (Around $5.00 used on Amazon.com, including shipping); The Taming of the Shrew (Around $4.00-$6.00 from Amazon.com.) Introduction to Shakespeare

This course will introduce students to a number of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, including both comedies and tragedies. Students will read the assigned plays at home, and then read scenes aloud during class. Students will also answer questions from “Tales from Shakespeare” to learn the background information for each play. Students will also complete a project or short paper on a topic relating to Shakespeare’s era. Tutor will briefly discuss the life and accomplishments of Shakespeare.  *Note: This course should not be considered a college prep course. It can be considered as a basic literature class (perhaps cover reading for 7th/8th grade), a fine arts class, or an elective.  Required Curriculum: 1) Tales from Shakespeare ($11.99 from Rainbowresource.com, or $3.99 download from logopressonline.com). 2) Shakespeare Plays: $4.00 to $6.00 depending on the version: Recommended: Folger Shakespeare Library or No Fear Shakespeare).

Physical Science Lab and Lecture

Students will investigate and learn various science concepts through both lab and text. This will be a full year course. Students will complete labs biweekly during class and complete 3 formal lab reports per semester. Tutor will lecture on chapters in text biweekly and encourage class discussion/participation. Students will complete “On Your Own” Questions, Study Guide Questions, and chapter tests at home in order to complete a full year of Physical Science credit.  Curriculum Required:  1) Apologia Exploring Creation with Physical Science: text, 2nd edition. (Available on Amazon.com for $50.00 for purchase, or $19.47 to rent).  2) Solutions and Test Book (Available on Amazon.com for $11.50) 3) Science Lab Journal (any type as long as it has graph paper. Available on Amazon.com for about $6.00-$9.00)

Pre Algebra

This is a year long course. Students will learn concepts in Pre-Algebra, as well as lessons in fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, word problems, and some geometry- including area, volume and perimeter. A significant portion of the course will focus on Pre-Algebra concepts, including variables, exponents and algebraic equations. This course is a prerequisite for Algebra 1.    Materials Required: Saxon 1/2 Pre-Algebra text  (2nd edition)  Optional Materials:  Saxon 1/2 Pre-Algebra Homeschool packet (solutions to lessons; tests) (2nd edition) Saxon 1/2 Pre- Algebra Test forms (2nd edition).  -Available on Amazon.com: Homeschool kit for around $10.00 - $40.00.
