Music History
This course will walk students through the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century styles of music, as well as providing a firm grasp of foundational music theory. We will be examining the cultural, social, and technological influences that shaped music throughout each of these periods, and students will gain a better understanding of how music reflects the world around us. Covering major figures like Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Stravinsky, we will be analyzing and interpreting musical works through their historical and cultural contexts, gaining a deeper appreciation of the artistry and craftsmanship behind so many of these pieces. Class format will include lecture, discussion, and audio/visual aids to better enhance students' listening skills. To facilitate communication between home and school and ensure that parents are kept informed of course conduct and expectations, a comprehensive year-long syllabus will be provided. Required materials include Donald J. Grout's A History of Western Music, with Anthony Tommasini's The Indispensable Composers being recommended but not required. Contact James O'Hearn <
