Beginning Writing Class

Class dates: for 2026: January 8, 15, 22, & 29 February 5, 12, 19, & 26 March 5, 12, 19, & 26
They will write poetry; instructions; an advertisement; a narrative, persuasive or an opinion essay; and try a short graphic story. Your student will have fun learning to use their creativity in writing.
The class format will be a combination of lecture, discussions, and a lot of writing.
We will address grammar during class also.
There WILL be homework assigned weekly.

British Literature (English 12) College Prep
This course is a survey of British literature from the Middle Ages through the Modern Era. However, our second semester will be a study of the works and life of C.S. Lewis. We will be reading a selection of his works covering some of his novels for children, science fiction, fantasy, myth, and various essays. The first semester will include an overview of four major literary periods: The Middle Ages, The Renaissance, The Age of Revolution and The Age of Reform. This Christian historic approach to British literature will concern itself with the political and historical ideas and their influence upon the authors. The class format will include lecture, discussion and reading, as well as audio/visual teaching aids.
A year-long syllabus will be sent home to ensure communication between parent/teacher, student and tutor. Materials required: British Literature for Christian Schools, Bob Jones University Press. (1992 and newer editions) Available for order from: www.bjupress.com or www.amazon.com. (A few are available in the HERC library). Five books by C.S. Lewis are required for the 2nd Semester. Any edition may be used and may be checked out from the Public Library system if needed: The Magician’s Nephew, The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, Out of the Silent Planet, Till We Have Faces.

Chess Club
The club meets once a month, 8 - 9 times in the school year, September thru May. See the HERC calendar for details. Chess is the strategy game of kings and generals. The game can be enjoyed at many different levels of play. Chess helps to develop critical thinking. Learn to play chess. All ages and skill levels, including beginners, are welcome. Have fun and improve your game strategy. Club time includes some group and individual instruction and board play time. Chess boards are provided. Students are welcome to also bring their own board if they wish. Strategy is discussed and play notation is encouraged to help develop strategy. Drama Club
Grade: 7-12 This a fun club where we work on acting skills and stage presence through improv and games during meetings and other gatherings. We also work on performances for HERC Showcases and Talent Shows, as well as occasional full-scale productions. Economics College Prep
Economics is the second semester of a student’s 12th grade requirement. This class will deal with the economics of countries and people from a biblical perspective. Topics covered include free enterprise, capitalism, free market, wealth and stewardship, and economic roles of individuals as well as government. There is much discussion, as well as projects, video clips, and class interaction. NOTE: Each component may be taken separately; Together with Government Class, these count as the 12th grade history core classes. Curriculum required: info given at the time of registration.
